The short answer

Does Baybayin Have Its Own Numbers?

Quick answerNo. Baybayin has no separate number symbols. To write a number, you spell the number word in Baybayin characters, so 5 becomes “lima” and 20 becomes “dalawampu”.

This surprises many people, because most writing systems have digits. Baybayin is a syllable-based script for sounds, and the Unicode block that holds it contains letters, vowel marks and the virama, but no digits.

Modern designers have drawn decorative numerals in Baybayin style for fonts and artwork. These are creative additions and are not part of the historical script, so treat them as design choices.

How any number from 11 to 99 is built

  • 11 to 19: these use the prefix “labing” or “labin” with the unit, such as labindalawa for 12.
  • 21 to 99: say the tens word, then ‘t and the unit, such as dalawampu’t lima for 25.
  • Hundreds: the unit joins “daan”, as in isang daan, or becomes “raan” after “na”, as in apat na raan for 400.

In practice

Writing Years, Dates and Phone Numbers

  1. Decide whether the number must be Baybayin. If not, keep digits beside your Baybayin text. This is the most common choice in designs.
  2. Spell small numbers as words. Ages, counts and short dates are easy to write out in full.
  3. Avoid spelling out long numbers. A year such as 2026 becomes a long phrase, and it is easy to make mistakes.
  4. Check the result. Spelling follows pronunciation, so ask someone who reads Baybayin to review anything permanent.
  5. Convert full sentences with a translator. If your text mixes words and numbers, the Baybayin Translator converts the whole line at once.
Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Baybayin does not have its own number symbols. Numbers are written by spelling the number word in Baybayin characters, for example “lima” for 5.
Write the word “isa” in Baybayin. It is spelled with the standalone i / e vowel followed by the character for sa.
Spell out the number word “isang daan”, which means one hundred, using Baybayin characters.
Yes. Many modern designs place Hindu-Arabic digits such as 2026 next to Baybayin text. This is a practical choice and not part of the historical script.
No. The Unicode block for Baybayin, called Tagalog, contains letters, vowel marks and the virama, but no digits.
Both are used in Filipino. Tagalog words such as isa, dalawa and tatlo are the native forms, while uno, dos and tres are Spanish-derived forms often used for money, time and age. Either can be written in Baybayin.
Spell the word used for zero. Filipino commonly uses “sero”, while “wala” means none or nothing.
The simplest option is to keep the digits beside your Baybayin text. If you want everything in Baybayin, spell out each number as words, which becomes long for years.
